How Much Do You Know About Men’s Health?

June 6, 2024

Test Your Knowledge During
Men’s Health Month

June is National Men's Health Month, a time to remind men – and the women who love them -- of the specific health issues they face and the importance of maintaining their health.

But how much do you really know about it? Take our quiz and find out!

#1. The most common type of cancer for American males is:

A. Skin

B. Lung

C. Pancreatic

D. Prostate

E. Colon

Answer: B. Lung cancer is the most common, killing more men than the next three common cancers (prostate, colorectal, and pancreatic) combined. It's also the leading cause of cancer death for women. Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths in men, and male smokers are about 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smoking men. Quitting smoking will lower a man's chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or cancer.

#2. Men are almost twice as likely to suffer from heatstroke than women. Which of the following is NOT a sign of heatstroke?

A. Red, hot, and dry skin with no sweating

B. Dizziness and confusion

C. Heavy sweating

D. Nausea

E. Rapid breathing

Answer: C. Heavy sweating is not a symptom of heatstroke. Heatstroke occurs when the body cannot control its temperature. If the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Heavy sweating is a sign that the body can still cool itself down. If you notice any signs of heatstroke, you may be dealing with a life-threatening emergency.

#3. At what age does heart attack risk increase in men?

A. 65

B. 35

C. 55

D. 25

E. 45

Answer: E. Heart attack risk in men begins at age 45, nearly ten years earlier than in women. While the majority of heart attack deaths occur in patients ages 65 and older, men in their 40s can reduce their risk through physical activity, healthful diet, quitting smoking, and reducing stress.

#4. Which of the following is NOT a common heart attack symptom for men?

A. Sudden dizziness

B. Cold sweat

C. Nausea or vomiting

D. Heartburn-like feeling

E. All of the above

Answer: E. While all of the above are common heart attack symptoms for women, they are not common symptoms for men. Heart attack symptoms in men are more likely to include chest pain, discomfort or tingling in arms, back, neck or jaw, and shortness of breath.

Men diagnosed with heart disease are typically ten years younger than women, and coronary artery disease strikes men about 20 years earlier than it does women. Sudden cardiac death is also more common in males.

#5. Which of the following is a symptom of prostate cancer?

A. Blood in the urine

B. Frequent urination, especially at night

C. Inability to urinate

D. Constant pain in the pelvis, lower back, or upper thighs

E. All of the above

Answer: E. Many men with prostate cancer have no symptoms, but the most common are those listed above.

However, these symptoms may also be caused by other prostate problems that are not cancer-related, such as an infection or an enlarged prostate.

#6. The fourth-leading cause of death for black American males (after heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries) is:

A. Homicide

B. Stroke

C. Diabetes

D. Kidney disease

E. Sickle-cell anemia

Answer: A. Five percent of black men in the United States die from homicide, the leading cause of death in African American men between the ages of 15 and 44. The vast majority of these deaths are gang-related.

#7. Over the last several years, gonorrhea has become increasingly resistant to treatment. (See video below.) Untreated gonorrhea can result in which of the following health problem(s) in men?

A. Epididymitis (i.e., swelling of the tube leading from the male testicle to the urethra)

B. Higher risk of contracting or transmitting HIV

C. Testicular cancer

D. Both And B

E. All of the above

Answer: D. Untreated gonorrhea can cause severe and permanent health problems in both women and men. Men with gonorrhea can develop epididymitis, a painful condition of the testicles that may result in infertility.

If gonorrhea spreads to joints or the blood, it can be life-threatening. In addition, men infected with gonorrhea can more easily contract HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. And HIV-infected men with gonorrhea are more likely to transmit HIV to someone else.

#8. Which of the following is a symptom of depression commonly found in men but not in women?

A. Fatigue

B. Insomnia or oversleeping

C. Impulsive anger

D. Feelings of hopelessness

E. Change in appetite

Answer: C. Men who are depressed often appear to be angry or aggressive instead of sad. Current research suggests that depression in men is caused by a combination of risk factors, including family history, environmental stress, and illness.
